As we enter a New Year, it’s time to revive the mind and set new goals, clear your head and reboot your mindset.
Here are 4 tips on staying positive as we look forward.
- Setting new goals renews our energy. Writing down your goals (on a notepad or journal) can help you make the positive steps toward accomplishing your plans and keep the bigger picture in mind. Writing down your goal daily with mini-steps to reach your goal can keep you motivated and inspired. Think about the results you want to achieve, but also have reasonable expectations for each day, it can help you stay focused while you move in the direction of your goals. Forbes suggests that instead of New Year Resolutions, to create goals to aim for during the year and create a plan of action.
- Compassion and being mindful go together. Having compassion is all about putting yourself in another’s shoes, being present and caring. Caring for others at home and at work can improve your mood. Checking in with your family members, friends and coworkers about how they are doing or handling a stressful time, hardship, heartache, or a certain difficult moment, can be as simple as just being there through a phone call, handwritten note, thoughtful gift, and really listening to others around you.
When you give someone your time or advice, and think carefully and thoughtfully about another’s perspective, you will in turn feel better about yourself and feel more positive. This can mean suggesting a way to work through a problem or ways to cope, and devoting some of your own time into improving an outcome, or simple acts of kindness, such as volunteering to help the lives of others. - Reflection can improve your positive attitude. Looking back through 2020 may bring feelings of grief, loss and stress when we think about how the pandemic disrupted lives, but when we focus on the ways we have pulled through the challenging year, the moments of resilience, it helps our emotional stamina. Through self-reflection and thinking about the positive life lessons that have been experienced, it can push us to look ahead and feel more thankful and grateful.
- Being mindful is also about checking in with your health. Ask yourself, are you sleeping enough? Are you eating well? Are you taking care of your body? Being healthy can make you feel happier and more positive, which leads to lowering stress levels and improving your immunity. When you are healthy and happy, you can radiate a more positive and understanding persona to others.
There will always be good days and bad days, but our mindset can affect whether a disappointment sets us back or springs us forward. So let’s walk into the year 2021 with a bright and positive mindset.
